The Fresh Start Educational Program
The Outreach Center provides free
adult education, GED preparation,
learning-skills training, computer literacy, financial literacy,
and employment skills education and
assistance through the Fresh Start
Education Center.
Fresh Start students are varied in
age, from teenagers to the elderly. They also vary in abilities, but
all are taught in a one on one educational environment. Many lack
self-confidence when they first enter the program. Most Fresh Start students have
been told that they lack certain educational skills, so they come
into our program with low self-confidence and self-esteem. Like
the other programs here at The Outreach Center, Fresh Start encourages
people and helps them rise above their current level.
In 2008, 390 people received education and
job preparation assistance at Fresh Start.
This is a 54% increase over 2007. Of the
390 people assisted, 379 took computer
literacy training. There were 249 students
enrolled in Adult Basic Education courses
and preparing for their GED. 17 individuals
graduated with their GED, 2 of which
graduated with honors. Of the 2008 Fresh
Start GED graduates, 8 went on to college.
